Apple, Amazon, and others have worked hard to simulate the experience of reading a book on a tablet computer, device or smartphone. Specifically, Apple’s iBooks iPad application has a page turning feature that replicates the curling of a page when you flip pages in a book. But Microsoft is claiming that it invented this feature in a patent application, according to a GoRumors report
Amazon just introduced a audio and video to the Kindle , but the only way to experience the new Kindle multimedia books is on an iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch. A baker’s dozen of titles already come in multimedia editions , including Rick Steves’ travel guides, Best of the Beatles For Acoustic Guitar , and Bird Songs: 250 North American Birds In Song .
Few will dispute Amazon’s role as current king of the e-commerce space, but this week’s TechCrunch Disrupt conference raised an interesting question: Did Amazon miss the boat on social commerce? At the conference last week in New York, John Caplan , CEO, OpenSky ; Rob Kalin , CEO, Etsy ; Susan Lyne , CEO, Gilt Groupe and Dan Porter , CEO, OMGPOP sat down to discuss the idea of social commerce and where the marketplace is going in the future in terms of both monetization and socialization. All of the panelists seemed to agree that Amazon will continue to reign supreme in “commodity commerce” but will not be able to lead social commerce.
Amazon has announced that it is to launch a Kindle app for Android, which allows you to view ebooks from Amazon without the use of the Kindle device. Although this app is available already for the iPhone , there is one new major bit of functionality that comes with it: the ability to buy books straight from the app.

All the big music sellers may have moved to non-DRM MP3 files long ago, but the watermarking of files with your personal information continues. Most users who buy music don’t know about the marking of files, or don’t care. Unless those files are uploaded to BitTorrent or other P2P networks, there isn’t much to worry about.
